Trailer boats magazine January 2008SPECIAL SECTION “Excellence in Design” - Cuddies

By their very design, cruisers and cuddies are meant to be spacious and accommodating, but in years past this usually meant their lines were more utilitarian than pleasing. Form followed function, so Willy the Whale hulls took precedence over more swept-back shapes. Today’s designers have worked wonders in mixing high style with layouts engineered to encourage social interaction, and the result is great-looking boats that give up nothing in terms of comfort and performance.

Frankly, the cabins aboard most cuddy models don’t impress us, but our first impression upon stepping below deck on the new Crownline 230 CCR was “wow.” This is a big cuddy… Maybe the best we’ve seen in this size craft.
What’s so special? For starters, it just feels roomy. Without making the boat too tall and ruining its lines, Crownline’s design team was able to create plenty of room to sit upright. It also added a head compartment for privacy, but maintained a spacious feeling by using a curtain instead of a door. Another outstanding choice was to offset the galley aft so you don’t lose cabin space.

Now, throw in a 50-plus mph speed and a topside layout that includes a wet-bar and a three-position transom seat/chaise/sunpad, and you’ve got excellence in cuddy design.
